24 Hours of Comedy Heaven

Last month, I attended the Palm Springs International Comedy Film Festival. While I initially had no plans to attend, all three of my comedies, Brunch Before Baptism, A Stand for Damaged Fame, and Death by King Cake, were selected to screen!

I’ve never been to Palm Springs, California, but this beautiful city was everything I expected! Due to my delayed flight, I could only stay for the Red Carpet Gala, one of the best 24 hours of my life. I flew in, changed clothes, and rode to the Hotel Zoso. Before the gala, I met with Byron Lane, a good friend and one of the most talented people I know.

Byron and I worked together several years ago in the news at KALB TV, an NBC affiliate in Alexandria, Louisiana. I had the honor of making a cameo in his hilarious web series, Last Will and Testicle. Byron is a brilliant writer and actor known for his short films and novels. Treat yourself and check out this fantastic artist’s website at byronlane.com. We only had an hour to catch up, which was well spent. Meeting with Byron, who lives in Palm Springs, highlighted my 24 hours. After visiting with my good friend, I headed towards the gala.

As I was walking in the hotel lobby, I ran into the beautiful and gifted actress Cybill Shepherd. She asked me if I knew where the gala was being held. I told her it was being held downstairs, and she grabbed my arm. We rode the elevator down to this elaborate event. You can’t imagine how honored I was to escort this legend to this festival honoring comedic icons.

As soon as Cybill and I entered, we were directed to the red carpet. It was a thrill to be interviewed by several entertainment reporters who inquired about my work. After the interviews, I met several legendary comedic filmmakers and performers, such as Tom Arnold, Mo Collins, Will Sasso, Kat Kramer, Jeff Garlin, Zach Noe Towers, Kathy Griffin, and many more. One notable artist whom I enjoyed meeting was Debra Wilson. Deb is probably best known for her standout characters from MAD TV.  She could be a life coach because of her excellent advice and beautiful aura.

My only regret is not meeting Paul Cruz, the Director of the Palm Springs International Comedy Festival, to let him know how much I loved his wonderful night.

Keep Laughing - David
